Unlocking the iPhone (or any phone for that matter) will allow you to be able to use any GSM (if on a GSM network or CDMA if on that network) network rather than just one.

In the case of the iPhone, they come locked to AT&T. If you are on T-Mobile for example & want an iPhone but don’t want to switch to AT&T, either buying an unlocked iPhone or unlocking one yourself will allow you to use an iPhone on T-Mobile.
Also if you are going away & don’t want to pay roaming charges you could with an unlocked iPhone just use a pay as you go/pre-paid SIM from a local carrier instead & save money.

Locked phones don’t give you that flexibility

One Customer Review

  • It allows you to use it with another network. It’s especially useful if you’re traveling to another country and want to use a prepaid sim. The problem is that it’s very difficult to keep an iPhone unlocked. You cannot upgrade your firmware through iTunes.

It’s not illegal. It simply voids your warranty.
