Q&A: What does an “unlocked iPhone” mean?
Question by emily (:: What does an “unlocked iPhone” mean?
I want to buy an iPhone off of craigslist or eBay..because I do not have an upgrade and I do not want to pay an extra 200$ on top of the cost of the phone. However..I do not know if I could just put my SIM card in the phone and it would work. What does an Unlocked iPhone mean? Thanks : )

An unlocked iPhone or any phone for that matter means that the phone is able to work with any gsm network. By default most phones are only set to work with one carrier. In the case of the iPhone it is At&t in the US

It means the phone has been unlocked from its original carrier and can be used with any sim card. In the case of the iPhone, it means that the phone has been hacked – jailbroken and unlocked. This means that if you want to keep it this way, you cannot update the firmware.
